2009 CVS Caremark Charity Classic Special Announcement

Weather delays at the U.S. Open drive change in main field lineup

BARRINGTON, R.I. (JUNE 21, 2009) – Torrential downpours at the 2009 U.S. Open have pushed the championship into a Monday finish, leaving the 11th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic without five members from the tournament’s main field. The team of Anthony Kim and Todd Hamilton, defending champions Camilo Villegas and Bubba Watson and popular South African Retief Goosen all made the four-over-par cut on Saturday at the 109th edition of the prestigious USGA event.

“Unfortunately, the rain delays at the U.S. Open have forced us to make a difficult decision,” said tournament co-hosts Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon. “We wish these five players the best of luck at the U.S. Open and hope that their schedules permit them to play in a future CVS Caremark Charity Classic.”

The five main field professionals will be replaced by PGA TOUR professionals Brad Adamonis, Matt Kuchar and David Toms and LPGA Tour professionals Laura Diaz and Brittany Lincicome. Along with Kuchar and Lincicome, Rhode Island native Adamonis will be making his debut appearance in the Charity Classic. Laura Diaz is returning for a 2nd year in a row, after playing in 2008 with Nicole Castrale. David Toms is making his 6th appearance in the event.

“We’re thrilled that these great professionals could join us and enhance our already impressive roster,” said tournament chairwoman Eileen Howard Dunn. “We are confident that these players will underscore our tradition of bringing championship caliber golf to Rhode Island.”

Retief Goosen, Anthony Kim and Todd Hamilton would all have been making their first appearances in the CVS Caremark Charity Classic. The loss of Camilo Villegas and Bubba Watson marks the first time in tournament history that a team will not return to defend their title.
